More corpsmembers earned their S-212 Wildland Chainsaw Certification this month! Through this training, they acquired essential skills, including safety protocols, precision cutting, saw maintenance, and other relevant skills.
Notably, this training took place at Big Basin State Park, where corpsmembers assisted in clearing overgrown vegetation and removing fallen debris from the park. The corpsmembers were also able to camp on-site for four days, allowing them to unplug from city life and connect with nature. This hands-on learning in the field strengthened their skills for upcoming projects and their future careers.

This week, a group of corpsmembers from the Charter School had a chance to take a tour of San Jose City College. They learned about different degree and certification programs, transfer opportunities, and received advice on how to navigate life as a college student. If you are interested in attending a college tour in the future, please reach out to our College and Career Counselor, Christen Rocca, and look out for future announcements in Team Talk!
Environmental Project crews have been hard at work recently as they remove invasive plants from areas along the Atherton Channel in Menlo Park. Their efforts are helping to restore local biodiversity, reduce wildfire risk, and protect vulnerable species. Great job, everyone!
Our Resilience department has also been busy this week, assisting with the Medfly Project. The Medfly Project targets an insect that lays eggs in fruit and eats the fruit from within. This insect infestation has been affecting our area at an exponential rate, and corpsmembers have been tasked with supporting the State Department of Agriculture and Food to mitigate the spread. Their job is to remove any potential fruit that may be infected with the insect, and as a result, prevent them from spreading to large crops and farms.
We're proud to announce that the SJCCCS E-waste program has recently been ranked number one for all California Conservation Corps! This past fiscal year, the team was able to collect over 620,000lbs of e-waste, a 12% increase over the previous year. A big thank-you to Coordinator Norma O., Supervisors Oscar D. and Luz V., and all the corpsmembers who worked in the department over the year. Because of their efforts, we are creating a lasting impact on our neighborhoods, local community, and the planet.
